Use Case: Smart Grid

In the CAPE project, IPTO explores how transmission power grids can become more intelligent and adaptive in an operational environment shaped by increasing renewable energy integration. As large-scale wind and solar generation introduce variability and uncertainty, centralized monitoring approaches are no longer sufficient to support timely operational decisions.

IPTO’s smart grid use case focuses on enhancing grid intelligence through predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and data-driven optimisation techniques. By processing high-frequency operational data closer to its source, the use case evaluates how edge computing can enable earlier detection of abnormal behaviour, faster insights into grid conditions, and improved responsiveness during stressed or volatile situations.

Through CAPE, IPTO contributes to the validation of distributed, Infrastructure-as-Code–based workflows for deploying and managing analytics across edge and cloud resources. This work supports the development of a more resilient, scalable, and future-ready transmission grid, capable of meeting the challenges of the energy transition.
